"This obedience, however, will be acceptable to God and agreeable to men then only, if what is commanded is done without hesitation, delay, lukewarmness, grumbling or complaint, because the obedience which is rendered to Superiors is rendered to God."
In his follow up to the virtue of obedience, St. Benedict explains that it is not so much what we do as much as how we do what we do that matters especially to God.
So much of the contemporary world is "results driven" as we say. The exterior act and its supposedly lasting impact are what ultimately matters to the hurried minds of modernity.
But what could the exclusive importance of outcomes mean to the Omnipotent, Omniscient one who lacks nothing and can accomplish anything He wills?
We'd do well to remember that many "impactful" historical personalities have lost themselves by virtue of their deeds for which they have notoriety whereas many humble saints who were counted as nothing in their own lifetimes have gained everything.
It is how we do things, why we do things, etc. that give eternal spiritual value to what we do.
This is the manifestation of our dignity that unites pauper and prince as one kind of creature before their Creator.
God did not make commodities of man. The world does.
And this is a major reason why Mundus-- "the World"-- is evil.
